What are Health Supplements?

For good health, our bodies need a constant supply of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients throughout our lives. However, getting all of the vital nutrients we need solely from food can be difficult. Although health supplements cannot replace a well-balanced diet, when used properly, they can provide sufficient quantities of essential nutrients. If used properly, then health supplements can play an important role in maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Here are some questions that you might ask yourself and responses about taking health supplements.

What are health supplements?

Health supplements include vitamins, minerals, botanical or herbal extracts, amino acids (protein building blocks), and enzymes (complex proteins that speed up biochemical reactions). The following are popular types of supplements: tablets, pills, powders and liquids.

Health supplements don’t treat or cure disease, however, consumers should be assured that their products such as NutraCare Life supplements are safe and that certain quality requirements are complied with. They must ensure that the labeling of the supplement facts is correct and that the bottle contains exactly what it says.

Who can benefit from health supplements?

Health supplements are used for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Keep their overall health in check
  • Help with mental and athletic performance
  • Assist the immune system
  • Individuals with Food Allergies or Dietary Restrictions – If you are vegan, possess food allergies or lactose intolerance, or even have difficulty digesting or absorbing nutrients, health supplements may be beneficial.
  • Pregnant women or women who are planning to get pregnant – Women who are planning to become pregnant should consume 400 micrograms of folate per day, either through food or supplements, to protect against birth defects. Folate is a B vitamin that is required for the production of genetic materials such as DNA. It is available in prenatal vitamins, which may also contain iron and calcium.
  • The elderly – Some vitamins and minerals may be more important to older people than for younger people. Calcium and Vitamin D are important for bone strength, as is Vitamin B-6, which aids in the formation of red blood cells, and Vitamin B-12, which aids in the maintenance of nerves and red blood cells.

Safety

The risks are low if you take dietary supplements as directed, follow all guidelines, and communicate with your doctor. Some dietary supplement side effects include upset stomach, heartburn, gas, and bloating. Always consult with your doctor if you are already taking medication or have any concerns.
